Kathy Paulus is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning, self-taught artist based in Moreno Valley, California, USA.
Kathy works mainly in pastel and scratchboard. She enjoys realism and the challenge to capture the real beauty in animals. She has a special love for horses and all wild cats. She has done many commissioned animal portraits and enjoys the joy it brings to a devoted pet owner. Her artwork has won numerous awards both nationally and internationally.
Kathy has won several Best in Show awards in Fusion Art’s Western Art Exhibition (Summer 2022), the 5th Annual Black & White Art Exhibition (February 2021) and the Holidays & Traditions Art Exhibition (December 2019). She was also featured in the gallery’s “A Day in the Life” series (May 2020), which is the gallery’s interview series that reveals the “typical” day of many of its award-winning artists.
Kathy Paulus Artist Biography
Kathy Paulus is a retired Infant Specialist who worked with children with special needs. She started her journey in pastels in her early 50’s. She considers herself a self-taught artist specializing in pastels. She is also a scratchboard artist and a member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA). She is an active member in the Redlands art Association in Southern California and is currently teaching a Beginners Scratchboard Workshop a couple times a year. She has won many local awards and various online International competitions.
Kathy Paulus Artist Statement
I specialize in Pastel work and I have developed my own techniques in this medium. I loved working on the piece “The Patriot” as it was a challenging work for me. My favorite subject is horses and this was my first time including a saddle and bridle in a painting. I am also a scratchboard artist and alternate my work between pastel and scratch. Most of my subject work is in wildlife and horses. I usually start with the eyes on my subject – it is the most important detail for me as an artist. I also enjoy still life subjects. I strive for realism in all my work and love the challenge of a difficult piece. I always give all the credit to God for answering my prayers for any talent I may have – to Him be all the glory!
