My work is primarily mixed media. I enjoy working with new tools and mediums and seeing what will happen. I often ask myself “what if I did this or that.” Fun things can result. When planning the two Blocchi paintings, I used a basic block pattern. The substrate that I used is a square cradled panel. I laid down the top color bar and the bottom basic color with additional colors to create two bottom areas. I used acrylic paints to begin the process. Texture was created using paper towels that had raised shapes blotting on the wet paint. As the paint dries, washes are used to bring out the texture and lots of rubbing away and adding more deepens the surface.
To pull it all together I used some subtle lines and shading. A final coating of varnish gives the work a rugged surface. The cradle panels are painted in a complementary color. The square space lends itself very well to my work. I find that I use it almost exclusively on paper and canvas as well as panel.
